Digital Photography Equipment
Saturday, September 25th, 2010Well, you certainly need a camera, but you already knew that. There was a cartoon, probably many of them, when I was young, that showed the photographer, a bear or moose, or Grey Fox, or something, with tons of equipment bags, numerous items falling form each, and of course total chaos around the entire photo set. Well it’s not quite that bad today. Oh, don’t get me wrong, there is still much photography equipment that you will need as your interest in digital photography grows, but much of the bulk is gone. In this short article I just want you learn of a few simple basics … in other words what is required to have a successful launch in digital photography.
Digital Camera Tripod … Be Steady
Many digital cameras today have shot stabilization, but a basic tripod is still great to have. If firm stability is really needed there is no second to a good tripod. You do not have to go crazy in big bucks even though they are available in a wide range of prices. Just take a moment to consider what you may need as your interest in photography matures. It is generally a good idea not to buy the best, but certainly don’t by the very bottom quality either. Remember, there will be a time when you want an absolutely still shot or a longer exposure in low light situations.
Memory Sticks oh Memory Cards
Don’t forget the memory cards. The worst thing you can have happen in relation to photo taking is to not have enough memory. In my early learning, I more than once ran out of room, what a horrible feeling when you miss a great shot that is now gone forever. (It won’t make the wife happy either.) Cards today have huge amounts of memory, but with still and video being taken they can still fill up fast. With reasonable prices it is wise to have at least two at all times. Oh, and keep the storage covers, it keeps them clean.
Grey Fox Ask … Can You Say Need Power .. Battery Up
How simple, but how often forgotten. Even with a full charge just installed a full day can really go through the power source. It is always a good idea to have a fresh supply on hand. The newer cameras have power savers and are good about managing battery usage, but still it is best not to take the risk. Make sure your extras are fresh and have plenty of life left….again don’t miss the shot of a lifetime.
Camera Bag …. A Fanny Pack Just Won’t Work
Besides they are not cool on a swim suit shoot. Well you really don’t need much. Just a basic carry bag with a few compartments. The fanny pack won’t work because it is just not large enough. We are looking for functional not cute. Make sure you have room for your camera of course, a place for an extra lens, or two, some batteries, and a side pouch for your memory cards. I like too having a space also for my USB cable(s). Some will allow for your tripod to be strapped under them for an easy carry system.
Say Zoom Lens
Starting out you don’t need the best, or the most. Consider just a good basic Zoom and Macro Lens. Look around since there are some camera manufactures market a lens that is a combination of both zoom and macro. Again, as you grow in skill you can add more.
The above will get you started on your journey. Like any hobby, or profession, it can take on a life of its own. But, don’t go wild at first. Take your time well … just tinker at first. It may also be a good idea also to look into some Photography Training at our Grey Fox Photo site to learn new skills or to improve on the old ones. A lifetime, or a moment of memories, can be captured with digital photography if you take a little time to improve your skills. There are many sources for training and all you need to do is shop around
